The function and safety of your home can be increased tremendously when you change some specific indoor and outdoor items on time. To automate the process, simply make sure these six home improvement tasks are added to your calendar, to remind you of whatever necessary home updates you need to carry out.

1. CO2 and Smoke Detectors

While CO2 detectors last up to seven years, smoke detectors can last up to 10 years. Properly functioning smoke detectors can significantly increase your chances of surviving a house fire by as much as 50 percent. While you replace these devices regularly, you should also remember to change the batteries in both detectors at least once a year.

2. Fire Extinguisher

If you use a rechargeable fire extinguisher, it can serve you for as long as six years. Disposable fire extinguishers, on the other hand, have a have a shelf life of 12 years. Always check the pressure gauges of your fire extinguishers at least once monthly to ensure that they still work and that they remain charged or full. Replace the extinguishers as required.

3. Water Filters

Your refrigerator's water filters should be replaced twice a year while you should change that of your portable water pitcher every two months or after 40 gallons of use, whichever comes first, while that of the total house system should be changed every four to six months to reduce your exposure to harmful bacteria and chemicals.

4. Washing Machine

If well cleaned and maintained correctly, your washing machine should last between eight to twelve years. You may carry out routine maintenance tasks such as changing the door gasket or tightening water connections behind the unit to prevent leaks. The need to balance the machine may also arise, or if it makes extreme noise, a replacement of the motor mount.

5. Dishwasher

A good dishwasher can last as long as ten years if it's regularly cleaned and maintained. If you would like to save on your energy and water bills, you should consider replacing your dishwasher around year eight after purchase.

6. Clothes Dryer

You should switch out your entire dryer once every eight to 10 years. But before then, you can replace any faulty parts such as the drive belt, drum roller, blower wheel, and heating element when it needed. The dryer vent should also be cleaned after each use to improve the dryer’s effectiveness.

Simply set reminders for all these tasks and watch the process become a lot easier for you.

When was the last time you examined the lighting in your hallway? For home sellers, you may want to consider revamping the lighting in your hallway. By doing so, you can brighten up your hallway, and ultimately, help make your home more appealing to prospective homebuyers. So what does it take to improve your hallway lighting? Here are three tips to consider: 1. Add Lighting Controls. Although you may already have a light switch to control your hallway lighting, incorporating a dimmer switch or occupancy sensor into your hallway may prove to be a great option to enhance your hallway's overall appearance. A dimmer switch ensures you can brighten or dim your hallway as much or as little as you choose. The added control provided by a dimmer switch enables you to create a certain ambiance that you can share with homebuyers when they check out your residence. Comparatively, an occupancy sensor detects when a person walks through a hallway automatically. This sensor may serve as a distinct feature in your home, one that may help your residence stand out in the eyes of homebuyers. 2. Incorporate Wall Sconces. For home sellers who want to impress prospective homebuyers the moment they enter a hallway, wall sconces may serve as ideal additions. Wall sconces come in many shapes and sizes, allowing you to select lighting that matches your hallway's décor beautifully. Also, wall sconces are available that enable you to create both up and down lighting that can give your hallway a one-of-a-kind look and feel. Try to find wall sconces that deliver a sense of balance in your hallway. By doing so, you'll be able to utilize wall sconces that provide a superior mix of fashion and function. 3. Install Track Lighting. Looking to brighten up a long hallway? Choose track lighting – you'll be glad you did! Track lighting typically runs parallel to your hallway's walls and offers immense versatility. Therefore, it serves as a wonderful option for those who want to make a hallway dazzle day after day. In many instances, you can change the direction of track lighting with ease, too. This type of lighting gives you superb flexibility, and as such, remains an exceedingly popular option in many homes. When it comes to brightening up a hallway or any other area of your home, be sure to evaluate all of the options at your disposal. Remember, you'll want to do whatever you can to help your residence sparkle, and the right lighting may enable you to transform a dull hallway into an eye-catching one. Lastly, don't forget to consult with your real estate agent before you perform hallway lighting improvements or other home repairs. This real estate professional likely boasts years of industry experience and will be able to guide you as you explore ways to make your home more attractive to homebuyers. Take a close look at your home's hallway lighting, and you're sure to find many great lighting options that you can use to help your residence stand out in any real estate market.

Want to show the full potential of your home's garage to prospective homebuyers? Embark on a garage renovation journey – you'll be happy you did! With the right garage improvements, you'll be able to maximize the storage space at your disposal and make your house more attractive to homebuyers as well. So what does it take to transform your garage into a wonderful storage space? Here are three garage improvement tips that every home seller needs to know: 1. Declutter Immediately. Remember the old car parts, broken tennis racket and other clutter that fills your garage? Now is a perfect time to get rid of it, especially if you want to improve your chances of selling your home and free up space in your garage simultaneously. Decluttering your garage can be simple, particularly for a home seller who is focused on showing homebuyers just how much space his or her garage has to offer. Remember, one person's junk is another's treasure, and you may be able to sell some of the items in your garage online or as part of a yard sale. On the other hand, you can dispose of broken items in your garage, or you may be able to donate various items in your garage to a charitable organization. 2. Use All of the Garage Storage Space That Is Available. Don't be afraid to think outside the box to use all of the storage space in your garage. For instance, did you know that you can use ceiling hooks to hang a bike or canoe in your garage? That's right, and this creative use of storage space might help you optimize all of the garage space that is available. In addition, many home improvement retailers sell innovative storage solutions that you can use to maximize your garage storage space. And with state-of-the-art garage storage solutions like slatted hooks, you should have no trouble storing a wide range of items in your garage at all times. 3. Keep Your Garage Neat and Clean. Like every room in your home, your house's garage can make a difference in the eyes of homebuyers. Thus, you'll want to make it a neat, clean area, one that may help you generate interest from homebuyers. Ensuring anyone can enter and exit your garage easily is paramount. Furthermore, you may want to show homebuyers that your garage is capable of holding multiple cars and should try to highlight the ample amount of space it offers. Garage improvements usually offer substantial return on investment (ROI), particularly for a home seller who is operating on a budget. These repairs may enable you to enhance the appearance of your home without breaking the bank, and ultimately, speed up your chances of selling your residence. Take another step toward generating significant interest in your residence by embarking on a garage improvement journey. By completing the right garage repairs in a timely manner, you'll be better equipped to maximize the value of your house and spark interest among many homebuyers.
